THE DEO (GOLDEN AGE)

The Department of External Observations was introduced in Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate as a governmental agency of the 1960's committed to the study of paranormal phenomena. In the Monument of Triumph release, a set of weapons and a lore book were released which hint at the status of the DEO in Earth's Golden Age. To augment the fantasy of those rewards, a visual identity pass was required which aimed to show what the corporate identity of the DEO would look like hundreds of years on from the 1960's.

The DEO eagle was developed as a minimalist successor to the more ornante bird seen on the DEO crest of the 1960's. The visual identity for the agency in the Golden Age replaces celestial forms like stars for Swiss minimalist-inspired geometry and a clean type logo. The goal was to determine what the corporate identity of the DEO would look like after decades of brand refinement, similar to the aesthetic differences between the modern-day FBI branding and their original agency look.

For the brand identity implementation on the weapon set, it was important to develop ornamental icons which felt seated in a militaristic functional style, while not moving completely away from the paranormal mission parameters of the DEO.
