Destiny 2: Renegades

Taking thematic inspiration from the iconic Star Wars saga, Bungie collaborated with Lucasfilm to tell a bold new story in the Destiny 2 narrative. Containing all of the rougeish scoundrels, imposing villains, and searing laser swords that Star Wars fans have come to expect, Renegades told the story of a sinister foe and the ragtag band which pulled together to defeat him. The primary expansion icon needed to be something which conveyed a sense of bold adventure, and most importantly echoed the aesthetic of the Star Wars universe while still feeling appropriate within the game world of Destiny 2.

In order to pay homage to the Star Wars design language while also staying true to Destiny visual pillars, I decided to focus on a shape which echoed the classic insignia of the Rebel Alliance. In order to keep the shape feeling correct for Destiny, I introduced an amount of purposeful asymmetry and breaks in the form. I developed a companion radial for the main icon which employs contrasting visual language, inspired by the villanous Barant Imperium. This radial uses harsher, razor-straight linework merged with a spoke-like shape inspired by the primary weapon emitter of the sinister Nightfall Station's deadly Eclipse Energy Projector.

For the UI brand template, I employed colors and shapes which were inspired by the original Ralph McQuarrie concept art - an iconic piece of film art history. The purple-orange sunset gradient recalls a somber desert vista, and the brightly colored bold line motif would look right at home on the helmet of a Y-Wing pilot.
